If you’ve never been on a scenic float, there is nothing quite like the serenity of being perched atop the warm rubber tube of a river raft, skimming over still water, searching for wildlife on the far bank and listening to the reverent voice of your guide as they share pearls of wisdom about the surrounding landscape. And if you’ve never rafted whitewater, there’s also nothing like the adrenaline rush as your boat, piloted by your trusty guide, enters a stretch of rapids, bucking and splashing as you hoot and holler with joy. Whether you’re looking for peace or adventure, Jackson Hole Whitewater offers both experiences on the beautiful Snake River, just south of Grand Teton National Park. Because the Snake is such a wide, deep river it’s predictable and safe, making it an excellent spot for first timers and family friendly fun.

Before you can embark on any river trip you need to choose an outfitter. Luckily, in Jackson Hole there is an obvious choice. Jackson Hole Whitewater is the last family operated outfitter in the area, started by the Tibbitts Family more than 60 years ago. Their top two priorities are customer safety and customer service meaning that you’re going to feel taken care of throughout your rafting experience. Their commitment to the customer experience is also great for their guides, the majority of whom are locals and have been with the company for a long time. They hold deep knowledge about the landscape, river and town. After you get off the river they will gladly point you in the direction of a great lunch spot or where to grab a refreshing beer. Jackson Hole Whitewater is also ready to accommodate you and whoever you’re bringing with you. They guide for large groups, small groups and individuals.

One of the best things about rafting with Jackson Hole Whitewater is that they have two different trip options, each offering a completely unique experience on the Snake River. The first is their whitewater rafting trip which is a blast and runs an eight-mile stretch of river, notably through the Snake River Canyon where you’ll find yourself gaping at the high expanse of canyon walls and searching for mountain goats traversing the rock far above. This section of the Snake feels extreme, including some Class II and III rapids, while being safe and family friendly, and still including plenty of peaceful paddling, like a stretch of river called the Mellow Mile where rafters are encouraged to jump in and swim to cool off.

Jackson Hole Whitewater also offers a scenic float starting at Snake River Ranch, a private boat launch that other commercial groups in the area don’t have access to. From this special put in, boaters will enjoy a truly serene float down a very wild stretch of the Snake. It’s common to see black bears, eagles, moose, otters and Snake River Ranch’s local herd of 200-plus elk, all with the Tetons as a stunning backdrop. Because this stretch of the river is calm, this trip is great for folks ages four and up.

Regardless of which trip you choose you’ll spend about an hour and a half on the water, be shuttled to and from the boat launch in Jackson Hole Whitewater’s private buses and have the pleasure of floating with the company’s expert guides.

When is the best time to raft the Snake River?

The early river season starts mid-May and offers higher water, making the trips fast and exciting. Wetsuits are often desired during this time to keep boaters warm and comfortable but the ride is undeniably thrilling. Then in mid-June peak season begins and lasts through mid-August. During this window the weather is hotter, the water is smoother and boaters can come in their swimsuits, excited to cool off in the Snake’s refreshing waters. However, the season doesn’t end there because the fall is a beautiful time to be on the river with colors changing and elk bugling along the banks. Because the Snake’s water levels are controlled by a dam there’s water throughout the rafting season, making it possible to raft almost year round.

What should I bring on my rafting trip?

First of all, dress for the weather. If you’re doing an early season trip consider renting a wet suit from Jackson Hole Whitewater. If you’re in peak season, prepare like you’re going to the pool. Wear sun clothes, bathing suits, water shoes with a heel strap and bring sunscreen and other forms of sun protection. Always remember to secure your personal items to your body if you’re going to bring them because anything that ends up in the river is likely gone. This means using staps like Croakies on your sunglasses, and putting your cell phone in a splash bag with a strap that goes around your body. If you’re truly worried about losing something, it’s best to leave it on the bus. Luckily, Jackson Hole Whitewater has partnered with a photographer who will take photos of you while you’re on the river and you can choose which ones you want to purchase after your trip, so there is no need to bring your own camera to document this unforgettable experience.
